What is car key programming, exactly?
Modern cars will not start unless the key's chip is recognised by the immobiliser. Programming is the process of registering the key's unique code with the car's computer using specialist diagnostic equipment. Cutting the metal blade is only half the job — without programming, the key turns but the engine will not start.
When does a key need programming?
Four common cases: you bought a blank or second-hand key; all keys were lost and a new key was cut from the lock; you want a spare chip or smart key; or the car stopped recognising a key after a battery change or electrical fault. In each case the car must be present — programming happens to the vehicle, not on a bench.
What information do you need to program my key?
The make, model and year; whether it is push-start or turn-key; and what you have in hand — a new blank, a second-hand key, or nothing at all. A photo of the key on WhatsApp helps us confirm the chip type before we dispatch, so we arrive with the right equipment and the right quote.
What can go wrong with key programming?
Second-hand keys are the main risk: some can be reused, others are locked to their original car and can never be reprogrammed. Cheap unbranded blanks sometimes fail to hold programming. We test every programmed key — lock, unlock, start — before we leave, and we tell you honestly if a key you bought elsewhere cannot be used.

Car Key Programming: questions we hear
Can you program a key I bought online?
Sometimes. Send us a photo of the key and tell us the exact make, model and year first. Some online blanks work fine; others are the wrong chip or locked to another car. We will tell you before you pay for a visit.
How long does key programming take?
It depends on the car. Many take well under an hour at the roadside; some security systems need longer procedures. Tell us the make and model when you call and we will give you a realistic time.
Will programming erase my existing keys?
Adding a key does not erase the others. In all-keys-lost jobs we can also erase the lost keys from the car's memory so they can no longer start it — tell us if you want that done.
My key stopped working after I changed its battery. Can you fix it?
Often yes. Some keys need re-syncing to the car after a battery change; others have a damaged chip. We diagnose it at the car and either re-sync, repair or replace the key.
