What is a transponder key, and why does the chip matter?
Inside the plastic head of most car keys since the late 1990s sits a tiny chip — the transponder. When you turn the key, the car checks the chip's code against its immobiliser. If the code is unknown, the engine is blocked even though the key turns. The chip is the security; the blade is just the mechanical backup.
Why won't a cheap cut-only copy start my car?
Because a market-stall copy duplicates the blade but not the chip. It will open the doors and turn in the ignition, but the immobiliser will refuse to start the engine. If someone offers you a 'car key' that is only cut and not programmed, it is half a key. We always do both halves: cut and program, then test the start.
Cloning vs programming: what's the difference?
Cloning copies your existing key's chip code onto a new chip — quick, and the car sees the copy as the same key. Programming registers a brand-new, unique code with the car's immobiliser — needed when no working key exists or when you want the old keys erased. We use whichever your situation needs, and we explain which before starting.
What do you need from me for a chip key?
The car itself must be present — the chip is programmed to the vehicle. We need the make, model and year, and to know whether a working key exists. If all keys are lost, the job includes immobiliser work and takes longer; if you have one working key, it is a straightforward clone or add-a-key.

Can you tell if my key has a chip?
Almost certainly yes if your car is newer than about 2000. Tell us the make, model and year and we will confirm. The practical test: a key with a thick plastic head nearly always has a chip inside.
My spare key opens the doors but won't start the car. Why?
Its chip was never programmed (or was erased). The blade is right, the chip is unknown to the car. We program the existing key to the immobiliser — no new cutting needed.
Can a transponder key be copied at a regular key shop?
The blade can; the chip usually cannot. Most mall key kiosks cut blades only. If the copy doesn't start the car, the chip was never programmed — bring it to us with the car and we will finish the job.
Will programming a new key delete my old keys?
Only if you ask us to. Adding a key keeps the others working. In all-keys-lost or stolen-key situations we recommend erasing the missing keys from the car's memory.
