What are the signs of a failing ignition barrel?
The classic sign is a key that needs jiggling or wiggling to turn — that is worn wafers inside the barrel, and it only gets worse. Other signs: the key inserts but won't turn at all, the key turns but the car won't crank, or the key won't come back out. If your key works fine in the door but not the ignition, the barrel is the suspect, not the key.
Can the ignition be repaired, or must it be replaced?
It depends on the wear. Worn wafers can often be replaced individually, which keeps your existing key working — the cheapest outcome. A badly scored or seized barrel needs full replacement, and then the new barrel is keyed to match your existing key where possible, so one key still opens everything.
The key turns but the car won't start. Is that the ignition?
Maybe — or maybe not. If the key turns fully and nothing happens, the fault could be the ignition switch (the electrical part behind the barrel), a flat battery, a failed starter, or the immobiliser not recognising the key. We diagnose before quoting: you should never pay for an ignition replacement that was actually a dead battery.
Will a new ignition mean a different key for the doors?
Not if we can avoid it. Where possible we key the new barrel to your existing key, so one key still does doors, boot and ignition. We will tell you before starting if your model makes that impossible, and what the alternative is.

My key turns in the ignition but the steering lock won't release. What is it?
Often a worn barrel combined with steering-column pressure. Try turning the steering wheel firmly left and right while turning the key. If that fails, the barrel likely needs repair — call us rather than forcing it.
Can you repair a push-button start ignition?
Push-start cars have no barrel — the equivalent faults are a failed start button, a dead key battery, or the car's receiver. We diagnose which one it is at the car; see our smart key page for the key side of it.
How long does ignition barrel replacement take?
It varies by model — some barrels come out in under an hour, others need dashboard trim removed. Tell us the make, model and year when you call and we will give you a realistic time before dispatch.
Will replacing the ignition affect my car's immobiliser?
The barrel is mechanical; the immobiliser reads the key's chip separately. If a new key is cut with the repair, we program it as part of the job and test start before we leave.
